Sympathy for Loss of a Child

There is really no easy way to handle the news that one has lost his or her child. It may appear that no words will soothe the pain that the child's parents feel during this time. Although you, as a friend of the parents, may seem hesitant to offer any words of encouragement, with the mentality that they might outright ignore or reject them, this is the time they need their friends and family the most. They might want to alienate themselves from the world, and although they should be given the time to be by themselves and contemplate, they should not have to try to cope alone. You can show your love and support by writing a brief letter expressing your concern. Remember not to make the letter too lengthy because you do not want to overwhelm them as they are going through this. Below is a sample letter for parents who have lost their child:

Dear Fred and Alma,

Words cannot express the pain I feel for the loss of your precious daughter Daisy. My heart and prayers go out to you during this challenging time.

Daisy's cute giggle always made me smile. I remember how she would giggle every time she played with your dog, Sonny. I can see how much you wanted to capture every moment to keep as a memory with the way you would take pictures of her during every occasion.

Please try to take all the time you need off of work in order to recover. I am here for both of you anytime you need a shoulder to cry on or an ear to listen. If you ever want to tell stories and reminisce, I am only one call away. If you need me to help out with household chores or run errands, I am more than willing.

There are many people who love both of you and are concerned about you. I would like to you to spend time with your friends and family whenever you feel you are ready to do so. Let me know if there is absolutely anything I can do to help. May you be granted the courage and strength to overcome this. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
