Persons in grief often have a number of people to help them cope during the first few days of mourning but most of these people have to return to their own busy lives, or schedules. A letter of sympathy, or words of comfort, however, is there for those grieving to grasp, hold, and re-read as necessary to aid in their comfort, or to know you really mean to help in any way possible, or even to add to their memories of their loved one.
Some of the issues they need help with will only occur days or weeks after the death of their loved one. Any offer to help with issues around the estate, or issues concerning looking after their property (lawn cutting, snow removal, etc.) will not be appropriate to include in your initial sympathy note. These kinds of offers to help should be sent a few weeks or days after the funeral. Only you can decide 'when' is the best time, or in what manner to contact them.
While we probably have offered verbal assistance, or condolences, a letter of sympathy can convey our empathy, or offer to help in any way in more substantial terms. If you are offering to help, ensure that you give your phone number, address, and/or email so they can easily find you when you are needed.
